How do I give up my cat for adoption?
Here’s our basic how-to.
- Make sure they’re desexed, microchipped and registered.
- Ask around.
- Make sure your pet’s new home is right for them.
- Get them packed up and prepared for the move.
- File the paperwork.
What to do with kittens you can’t keep?
If you can’t find a home for the kittens, call your local animal shelter. OHS can accept kittens up to six months of age. Once older than six months, and if they are strays, then county requirements state that they must go to the local county animal services agency.
How do I surrender my cat?
Surrenders are by appointment ONLY – please phone our office between 10am and 5pm, Monday to Friday on (02) 9519 7201. If you’ve made an appointment to bring your cat to Cat Protection, please bring with you any health records, microchip forms and relevant paperwork belonging to your cat (eg desexing certificate).

PetSmart does not take cats, though you are allowed to bring your cat into the store if you are shopping. If you attempt to surrender a cat at a PetSmart location, you will be turned away and given other options.
